Wuthering Heights – destructive path of finding ourselves

Wuthering heights: a novel of identity, love, hatred and revenge. I feel like there are many ways to describe this novel. It is without a doubt a complicated love story between two eternal souls, Heathcliff and Catherine. It’s also an accurate description of the Victorian’s society and its values, beliefs but also its condemnations. 

However, I believe that Wuthering Heights is mostly a novel of identity: it’s about finding one’s own identity without falling in disgrace or excessively relying on someone else. 

How do you find out who you truly are in a world where you are forced from birth into a narrow role? This is the dilemma that had the biggest impact on me when reading this novel, possibly because I could slightly relate it to my own life, in a much less oppressive way of course.

One of the main characters, Catherine, struggles with the two sides of her: the “right” one, the one that is accepted by the world that she lives in, and the “wrong” one, the rebellious one, the one that is considered evil by her society. 

I’m convinced that most people in this world struggle with this issue and constantly try to find a balance in their life to satisfy the multiple sides of themselves. 

What happens, although, when you find someone and completely let yourself rely on that person? Your identity, your person could be destroyed without you even realizing it until you get to a point of no return, where you can do nothing but let yourself go.
